Need a Swamp Cooler?

In low-humidity areas, swamp coolers can provide a natural and energy-efficient means of cooling.  Swamp coolers, or evaporative coolers, work by passing outdoor air over water-soaked pads, which then causes water to evaporate into it.  This cooler air (anywhere from 15 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit) is then directed into a home, thus allowing the swamp cooler to provide cooling comfort by lowering the ambient temperature.

When deciding on a swamp cooler, always pay attention to the unit's air moving capacity, as well as installation and maintenance requirements.  Also, be aware that swamp coolers may require a bit more maintenance than portable air conditioners such as replenishing the water supply, draining the unit, and keeping the cooling pads clean.  Nonetheless, one of the main benefits of a swamp cooler is the fact that it can efficiently cool an area by using one third the amount of electricity of conventional air conditioners.
