Best Evaporative Cooler Locations:
Is a Swamp Cooler Right for You?

If you're interested in a less expensive and more efficient method for cooling your home or office, then an evaporative cooler, or swamp cooler, could be just the alternative you're looking for. These cooling units:

  • use the power of evaporation
  • cool areas of all different sizes
  • lower a room's temperature by as much as 20 degrees
  • only require an electrical outlet and water to operate
  • use a fraction of the energy needed to operate traditional air conditioning
  • are environmentally friendly and don't use refrigerants or coolants

Portable evaporative coolers come in many different shapes and sizes, and can cool practically any room, regardless of square footage. Small, personal swamp coolers can easily and efficiently cool most small rooms and offices with ease. Larger commercial units are designed for warehouses, agricultural facilities, athletic fields and entertainment venues.

But is a swamp cooler right for you?

To answer this question, you need to understand how an evaporative cooler works. The science is simple, and when we're done we'll help you decide if this kind of cooler is the right one to keep you cool and comfortable this summer.

What is evaporative cooling?

swamp-cooler-diagramIf you've ever climbed out of a pool on a hot day and gotten goose pimples, then you've felt the effect of evaporative cooling. When the water on your skin evaporates, it pulls heat from your skin to use as the energy it needs to transform from liquid to gas. The hotter and dryer the air, the faster evaporation occurs, and the colder you will feel.

The same principle is how evaporative coolers work. A fan pulls hot, dry air through water-moistened pads. The moisture in the pads evaporates quickly and the air temperature drops. The cold air is then blown throughout the room.

When does evaporative cooling NOT work?

When the humidity is high, there is already a high concentration of moisture in the air. Evaporation takes place slowly at best - think about how damp and sticky your skin feels, because even your body's sweat can't evaporate effectively.

When there is no rapid evaporation, there is no way an evaporative cooler can effectively cool the air. In fact, by adding more moisture to the air, you might end up even more uncomfortable than when you started.

In places where high heat is regularly accompanied by high humidity, portable swamp coolers are not a good choice to provide reliable cool air.

Where can I use a swamp cooler?

Evaporative coolers work best in warm, dry climates where humidity is low. The southwestern United State is a perfect example. In fact, people in desert climates have been using evaporative cooling in one form or another for thousands of years, all the way back to the early Egyptians.

The chart below describes how much cooling you can expect based upon the temperature and humidity levels.

As you can see, the numbers drop off considerably when both temperature and humidity are high. But when temperatures are high and humidity low, an evaporative cooler can lower the temperature as much as 20, 30 or 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
