What is the definition of a portable air conditioner?
Portable air conditioners are units that can be transported from room to room to cool different areas. Portable air conditioners are self-contained systems that do not require any permanent installation. However, portable air conditioners do require venting via a window or wall. The only requirement is to set up an exhaust hose that can vent outside once you decide where you would like to place the portable air conditioning unit.

What are the steps involved in venting a portable air conditioner?
You must install the portable air conditioner venting kit in order for the unit to work correctly in air conditioning mode. The venting kit should not be used while the unit is heating or when a fan mode is on. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Select the location for the vent.

  2. Slide the exhaust connector over the discharge opening and onto the back of the portable air conditioner.

  3. Connect the exhaust hose to the exhaust connector.

  4. Fit the opening by adjusting the length of the window kit. If required, also mark the kit and cut it down to fit the opening.

  5. Connect the venting window kit adapter to the window kit.

  6. Set the window venting kit into the window and connect the exhaust hose to the kit adapter. Shut the window. You are now ready to use your portable air conditioner!

Be sure to keep the exhaust hose very straight while using the portable air conditioner venting system. It is not recommended to increase the length of the exhaust hose, although it can easily be shortened. It is also not recommended to use an extension cord with your portable air conditioner. The way in which a portable air conditioner is vented will vary from unit to unit. Just remember to follow the instructions provided with your particular portable air conditioner. By venting the unit properly and following these directions, your portable air conditioner will last you for many years. What will happen if a portable air conditioner is not vented?
Venting a portable air conditioner is important because of the extracted hot air the unit is taking from the surrounding area. Venting is a necessary procedure for a properly functioning portable air conditioner. When you purchase a portable air conditioner, your window venting kit is included at no extra cost. Portable air conditioners can be vented through a variety of locations within your home including: a window, wall, ceiling or door. Generally, Plexiglas is used for venting portable air conditioners through casement windows. First, cut the Plexiglas to the size of the window, then vent the hole by cutting out five inches, and set this over the open window. This will allow the portable air conditioner to vent to the outside. Also, Plexiglas will let the same amount of light pass through the window as regular glass would.
